Birch

"What do you think makes life meaningful?"  Birch asked Hyacinth.

"Isn't life worth living because we give it meaning?"  Hyacinth answered.

"I think that everyone makes life worth living.  If I couldn't wake up to see you or Fir or Hydrangea I feel like I wouldn't even feel like going on."

"Well even if one of us pass do you still feel like you could keep living?"

"Honestly...I don't know Hyacinth...I don't know..."  Birch stared into Hyacinth's face.  Although Hyacinth was looking on deep in thought Birch couldn't imagine what life would be like if he lost anybody close to him.

Birch walked around in the lonely hovel remembering all the times he and Fir had shared.  Birch's health declined so rapidly after his death. Whether it was physical or mental no one could figure out.  Birch had complained about some mild chest pains nothing really too alarming but on the night after Fir's wake Birch passed into the night, the autopsy revealed it was a heart attack.  When Hyacinth heard the news he shuddered in his bed for hours waiting for the nightmare to be over.
